Ein malerisches Grundstück an einem märkischen See nahe Berlin: In den 1930er Jahren kauft ein jüdischer Tuchfabrikant mit seiner Familie die eine Seite für ein Badehaus, während ein Architekt und seine Frau auf der anderen Seite eine Bauhaus-Villa bauen. Die Nachbarn geniessen die gemeinsamen Sommerabende und plantschen im See – ein unberührtes Stück Freiheit und Idylle. Doch die politischen Ereignisse rund um den Zweiten Weltkrieg zwingen sie letztlich, ihr Heim zu verlassen. Das Grundstück wird von einer Schriftstellerin und ihrer Familie wiederbelebt, aber auf den Mauerfall und die Wende folgt die Enteignung. Nur der schweigsame Gärtner ist immer da.
Basierend auf dem Roman von Jenny Erpenbeck, konzentriert sich Volker Schlöndorffs Drehbuch und Film auf die intensiven Augenblicke im Leben der Menschen, die über die Jahre am See verweilen, auf ihre Träume, Pläne und Schicksale. Das Grundstück, heimlicher Mittelpunkt des Geschehens, bezeugt still das Kommen und Gehen der Generationen.
