Derya and Aziz are a celebrated artist couple: Aziz is a socially engaged dramaturge and lecturer in theater studies, Derya is the star of his plays. Together with their fourteen-year-old daughter Ezgi, they lead a fulfilling life in Ankara—until their open criticism of the government brings them to the attention of the state apparatus. Overnight, both lose their jobs; the police search their apartment and question their neighbors. The family flees to Istanbul, where they temporarily stay with Aziz's mother. But Ezgi struggles to fit in at her new school, and while Aziz responds to the pressure with increased resistance, Derya searches for a way out that will give her more freedom again. Gradually, the distance between them grows until their future as a family is ultimately at stake. Following “The Teacher's Room,” Oscar®-nominated German director Ilker Çatak once again presents a controversial masterpiece. The film centers on a couple who must choose between their ideals and conformity in the face of a corrupt authoritarian regime. Impressively carried by Turkish acting stars Özgü Namal and Tansu Biçer, “Yellow Letters” is a gripping drama about courage and power that focuses on the major socio-political issues of our time.
