CINQUE SECONDI
Week 1 | 106 mins | Age recommendation: 14+
By Paolo Virzi, with Valerio Mastandrea, Galatéa Bellugi, Valeria Bruni Tedesch.
Adriano is a grumpy loner who lives a reclusive life in the stables of Villa Guelfi, an abandoned estate in Tuscany. He spends his days smoking cigars and avoiding contact with everyone as much as possible. When a community of young men and women settles in the villa and dedicates itself to tending the abandoned fields and vineyards, he puts up a fight and tries to drive them away. But the recent college graduates in agricultural science, climate research, and oenology are curious about this hermit with a mysterious past: Why does he live all alone and want nothing to do with anyone? The seasons pass, the grapes ripen, and the initial conflict between the community and the aloof eccentric gives way to a shared life…
Once again, Italian director Paolo Virzì demonstrates his skill at weaving serious themes with a zest for life and heartwarming, lighthearted moments. “Cinque secondi” is a touching story about loneliness, compassion, and friendship, brilliantly portrayed by Valerio Mastandrea, Valeria Bruni Tedeschi, and Gallatea Bellugi. The film celebrated its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival.
